Chapter 10

Christmas morning started early for Sandy.

By habit rather than by choice, because she sure hadn’t set her alarm that morning, and the boys had been up later than usual the night before building some complicated Lego battlecruisers for the traditional intergalactic battle they waged each year after Christmas lunch.

So the house was quiet, just the clock ticking rhythmically from the kitchen wall above the toaster, when she noticed that the locum had bought gifts for her sons.

For some reason, seeing the scrappily wrapped items—cheap IGA-brand reindeer paper by the look of it, barely held together with thin strips of grey gaffer tape—had her eyes prickling.

Again.

‘Get a hold of yourself, Sandy,’ she said.

Elliot must have snuck into the house early, because it was barely six, and the extra gifts hadn’t been there the night before when she’d been tiptoeing around, taking bites out of the biscuits and carrots left out for Santa and his reindeers, and doing her own present drop under the tree.

There was a note on the kitchen counter.

Called out to a truck rollover. Might be a while—cattle involved. Save me some of that low-bar pavlova and I’ll be forever grateful.

Idiot, she thought fondly. The day was low bar, not the food. Her pavlova rocked. Speaking of, she supposed she’d better head outside and persuade some of her hens to offer up their eggs as tribute.
